Connection of the railway line Budapest-Arad to the multi-modal hub at Budapest Airport

The European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is providing a non-refundable grant of €14,841,000 for the project Connection of the railway line Budapest-Arad to the multi-modal hub at Budapest Airport. The project aims the extension and upgrade of the main railway line passing the airport territory to the freight handling areas and connecting the railway to all traffic modes on the airport territory. It will stimulate local growth and shift cargo traffic from road to rail, thus reducing traffic on regional roads and environmental impact.

The project includes:
• Upgrading and extending the existing rail tracks linking Budapest Airport to the trunk line
• Building a rail cargo yard with a handling capacity of 148 TEU per day and a storage capacity of 480 TEU
• Building a kerosene unloading station for rail cars and road tankers
• Developing the service road network connecting the logistic areas with the public roads and the airport terminals
• Construction of separate lanes for environmentally friendly means of transport, e.g. pedestrian traffic and bicycles
• Integration of two roundabouts for facilitating access to airport territory and public roads
• Upgrade of perimeter fence

This project continues the successful cooperation between Budapest Airport and the European Commission. Two projects focusing on the upgrade and expansion of passenger terminal facilities were co-funded by the European Commission and successfully completed in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
