Over the last two-three years, the growth of passenger traffic has been quite dynamic, and in the first five months of this year Budapest Airport also recorded double-digit growth of 12.5%. This is why the operator or Ferenc Liszt International Airport prepared the bud:2020 development program with a new building for passengers, Pier B, as one of its most important elements. Jost Lammers said that preparations had been underway for several months and the respective tender had been published. He is convinced that they can once again work with a Hungarian contractor at the airport as there were positive experiences during the construction of SkyCourt which was opened five years ago. The works of the new passenger pier will begin at the end of the year and are scheduled to last for about one and a half years.
The other key feature in the bud:2020 program is the airport hotel which today is a must-have for a world-class airport. The hotel may receive its first guests 15-17 months after commencement of works. In two or three years’ time the airport will be rather different, and its passenger capacity may jump to 15-18 million annually within five years. In the latter case a new terminal building currently under consideration – Terminal 2C or Terminal 3 – will be built. In the meantime, additional check-in desks will be installed in the terminal, and car parks will be extended significantly – some of these projects are underway already.
Regarding spending on security, the CEO of Budapest Airport stated that security-related costs will continue to increase, as things only move in one direction, the further tightening of regulations. As part of the bud:2020 program, billions are expected to be spent on security-related developments, for instance all security lanes will be equipped with state-of-the-art body scanners which enhance both the quality of security screening and passenger comfort. In alignment with this, Budapest Airport and the competent authorities keep track of what is going on in our world and work together on further improving security in the area of the airport.
Jost Lammers also mentioned the road and rail connection between the airport and the city. He said, plans are in the making, a railway connection will be implemented between the airport and Kőbánya-Kispest, and an underground railway station will be built at Terminal 2. The precise details are not known yet, as railway construction is the competence of National Infrastructure Development Zrt (NIF) and railway operation is with MÁV. The CEO believes that the railway station may be completed at the same time as the new terminal, sometime between 2019 and 2021. Concerning the express road, he said that at least two by two lanes would be necessary for serving today’s traffic. Budapest will host the aquatics world championship next year, the European Football Championship in 2020, and the city may win the right to host the 2024 Olympics. The express road in its current form is unable to handle increasing traffic any more.
