Strong start to the summer at Ferihegy

Passenger traffic grew by 4.8 per cent in June

Budapest, 17July, 2006. – Budapest Airport handled 811,554 passengers in June, a 4.8% or 37,276 passenger increase on the same month in 2005. For the 12 months to June 2006, total passenger traffic reached 8.315 million a 13.6% rise over the same period last year.

The number of transfer passengers (connecting from one plane to another without leaving the airport) grew by 10.5% in June 2006, compared with June 2005, up from 140,792 to 155,552 passengers. This represents a 26.0% increase year-on-year, to 1.542 million or 19.2% of all passengers.

The number of passengers travelling by low-cost airlines reached 191,974, a 9.3% reduction on June 2005. But in the year ending June 2006, Ferihegy handled close to 2.259 million low-cost passengers, a 23.6% increase on the same 12 months ending in June 2005.

In June 2006, the number of air transport movements increased by 2.4%, to 11,821 movements, compared with the same period last year. In the 12 months to June 2006, Ferihegy handled 127,197 air transport movements, a rise of 3.3% on the previous 12-month period.

Cargo traffic continued to grow in June. Budapest Airport handled 7,568 tonnes of cargo, a 15.7% rise on the same period last year. During the past 12 months, cargo traffic increased by 1.8% compared with same period last year and reached 79,340 tonnes.

Budapest Airport CEO Stewart Wingate said: “Budapest Airport is seeing continued growth in the summer season in both passenger numbers and in cargo. The major flag carriers performed very well this month and transfer traffic continued to grow. Budapest is still on the right path to become the most successful airport in Central Europe.”
