This is in addition to the existing airlines efforts, many of whom have increased capacities on their routes into Budapest. Just 5 days after the national carrier stopped flying, Budapest Airport is delighted to report that in more than 60% of the Malev point to point traffic has been recovered with the new capacities announced. Better still, most of these services will become effective over the next few weeks, ensuring that passengers will not experience too much disruption in their travel plans.
“Whilst the earlier assumptions of a complete loss of transfer traffic have been validated, the announcements made by the airline community since last Friday have put us on the road to recovery,” commented Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport.
Budapest Airport is doing its best to attract new airlines, launch new destinations and increase frequencies on existing routes with high demand. Airlines in both the traditional and the low-cost segment have responded positively, some new flights are already operating, with others commencing in the near future.
Aviation director Kam Jandu stated: “The announcements made in the last few days confirm our long held view that Budapest is indeed a primary destination for many airlines as they bid to grow their presence here in the absence of Malév. In spite of this early success, a gap remains in our business plan and we welcome discussions with airlines interested in services to Budapest Airport. Our published charges and incentive scheme are available to all airlines expressing an interest.”
Even though the above mentioned encouraging developments show signs of recovery of point-topoint traffic the complete loss of 1,5 million annual transfer passengers and income generated by them creates an extremely difficult financial situation for the airport. In order to be able to cope with this dramatic situation Budapest Airport calls the Ministry Of National Development and the relevant authorities to take urgent and coordinated joint steps together with the airport.
The airport’s CEO Jost Lammers,gave a brief speech prior to the Awards ceremony: “2011 was a recordyear in terms of passenger traffic performance and we must never for get that were ached over 8.9m passengers thanks to our airline partners,” he said. Acknowledging the collapse of the country’s nationalairline, Malev, earlierthismonth, he added: “Business continues and we have been very pleased with the fast recovery of some of the lost traffic already, though there is still much to be done. Looking a head, we need to ensure that Hungarian aviation grows from Budapest, the capital city, as history shows that it is what people are looking for. We know that one million extra passengers bring over a thousand extra workstations and major positiveeffectsfortheeconomy. It is important that all stakeholders work together to make us competitive within the marketplace.”

Effective 17th February it will commence direct services to six of a total 32 European destinations - Barcelona, Stockholm, Madrid and Dublin plus two all-new routes, to London Stansted in the UK and Karlsruhe in Germany. The 26 additional routes will start operations within the coming weeks.
The introduction of the Budapest-London Stansted route will increase the choice of London airports served, as well as offer some highly attractive fares. Existing routes to Budapest from the UK currently served by other carriers operate from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. Ryanair’s new route to Karlsruhe in Germany will offer direct and convenient access to the beautiful Black Forest region and the famous spa-town of Baden-Baden.
Jost Lammers, Budapest Airport CEO said: "Welcoming Ryanair back to our airport was always on the agenda and whilst they initially announced five routes for commencement in March, this has now been increased to 32 in total. Operating from Terminal 2 and paying the same T2 charges as all airlines in Terminal 2, there is now more competition in this market, affording more convenience and choice for travellers. We look forward to Ryanair’s long and continuous operations from our airport."

This latest phase of the airline’s recent expansion in the Hungarian capital increases capacity to over 2.5 million seats a year.
The sixth in a series of recently announced additional aircraft will begin operating as of early April 2012, with new routes to Malaga (Spain), Bucharest and Cluj (Romania), Warsaw (Poland), Sofia (Bulgaria), Larnaca (Cyprus), and Heraklion, Zakynthos, Rhodes, Thessaloniki (Greece). With these newest additions and the capacity increase announced last week, Wizz Air has now added more than a million new seats to their network. These new routes are already on sale at wizzair.com oldalon.
Wizz Air also aims to start services to non-European Union markets such as Tel Aviv, Kiev, Moscow, and Istanbul, subject to designation and regulatory approval.
In light of the airline’s growth in Budapest, Wizz Air is in the process of recruiting 100 additional local staff, bringing its total employee count close to 400 in Hungary. In addition, approximately 2,000 jobs have been created in service industries that support Wizz Air’s operation.

Two new flights will be operated from March 10 and 11 and as a result passengers travelling to Warsaw can choose from two departure times on Saturdays and Sundays. The number of flight from the present 17 will be increased to 19 and the airline will also increase the capacity of its flights. Embraer E-170 aircrafts with 70 seats will be replaced with Embraer E-195 with 112 seats. Aircrafts with greater capacity will be delivering passengers between Budapest and Warsaw.
LOT will launch its LO 535/536 flight instead of the planned summer schedule earlier on March 1.
The departure and arrival of the previous LOT flight in the summer schedule will change as the following:
LO531/532 Warsaw 18:05 – Budapest 19:35
The aircraft will take-off from Berlin at 12:45 and land in Budapest at 14:20. The return flight departs at 15:00 and arrives in Berlin at 16:35. Tickets are available starting at €49 including taxes, fees and topbonus miles.
With this new offer, airberlin is reacting to codesharing partner Malev’s exit from the market. The Hungarian airline announced on Friday that it was ending its flight operations. Stranded Malev passengers have the opportunity to transfer their tickets to airberlin for €49 one-way by the coming Wednesday.
With the new offer, airberlin is integrating the Berlin-Budapest connection into the hub structure at Berlin, which allows for numerous connection possibilities throughout Germany and Europe with Germany’s second largest airline. Starting from 20th February, Alitalia will re-launch its direct flight service between Budapest and Rome Fiumicio earlier. The frequency of flights planned from March 1 for the summer schedule will be increased from three (Monday, Friday, Saturday) to five weekly, with flights on Wednesday and Thursday as well. There will be daily flights from the April 1.
Return tickets are available from 28 400 HUF (including airport tax and charges, excluding service fees).

Starting from Friday, 9 March 2012, AEGEAN will offer a new direct service between Athens and the political and cultural capital of Hungary. AEGEAN will connect Athens to Budapest with 4 flights per week. The aircraft will depart every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from Athens International Airport at 09:15 and will return from Budapest International Airport at 11:05 (local time).
Dimitris Gerogiannis, Managing Director of AEGEAN stated: “We are facing a winter season with the lowest demand during Aegean Airline’s lifetime, a sharp rise in fuel prices and uncharacteristically and unnecessarily high airport fees and taxes in Athens determined by the Greek state. We have already made adjustments to our overall planning, due to low demand, but at the same remain vigilant and respond to opportunities that are compatible with our company strategy and meet the demands of the Greek tourism product.”
The flights to Budapest will be operated with the brand new AIRBUS A320, with 168 seating capacity, in dual class configuration offering a full meal and an in-flight entertainment system with six music channels without extra charges. Business class passengers will be able to enjoy improved seat comfort, a choice of meals and Greek wines, as well espresso or cappuccino. The flight schedule is designed in a way so as to offer connections from/ to the rest of Greece.

The present TAROM flight Bucharest-Budapest-Bucharest will be modified according to the following program, each day of the week, except Staurday:

Both flights will be operated with ATR planes.
The German low-fare airline offers tickets on a favourable price for those passengers affected by the Hungarian national airliner’s crisis. The Stuttgart-Budapest additional flights will start April 17, 2012 and tickets are already available at www.germanwings.com.
The Lufthansa Group acknowledged the cessation of operations by the Hungarian national carrier Malév Zrt. with regret. The Lufthansa Group has announced that it is ready to help Malév passengers with its services. Lufthansa is expanding the capacity of some of its aircraft departing from Frankfurt and Munich, and is increasing the frequency of flights from Frankfurt to Budapest to five a day as of 6 February. Additionally, Lufthansa is launching new flights from Berlin and Hamburg from 6 February.
A Boeing 737 will commute from the German capital every day, whilst the Lufthansa flight from Hamburg will also depart once a day, and the company is also continuously maintaining its three flights a day to Düsseldorf. In accordance with increased passenger demand, Austrian Airlines will also fly the Vienna-Budapest route with larger aircraft. As of 7 February, Swiss Air Lines increases the capacity of its flights on the Budapest-Zurich route, and Brussels Airlines will launch three flights a day to Brussels from 13 February 2012 instead of the current two.

The aviation marketing team of Budapest Airport was one of the eighteen co-exhibitors of Magyar Turizmus [Hungarian Tourism] Zrt at this four-day event of outstanding prestige. The Hungarian pavilion was implemented on the basis of the concept “Hungary – the source of health”on 100 square meters to present the wide touristic and cultural spectrum offered by our country. The concept was carefully targeted: Austria is the second largest sender market for us, with an average annual touristic spend of HUF 90 billion in recent years. Half of the money spent by Austrian tourists in Hungary go to health tourism directly. In addition to the services offered by BUD, our stand also presented an opportunity to book tickets at a discount, in the framework of a tailored promotion prepared by the aviation team featuring a selection of offers of partner airlines. In order to make a ticket to Budapest even more attractive for Austrians, Budapest Airport also offered discount parking exclusively to the visitors at FERIEN Messe.
Following successful testing last year, Budapest Airport has commenced live operation of its water quality monitoring device in order to protect the water quality and the cleanliness of nearby natural waters. The machine measures the concentration of organic matter in rainwater, which enters the water drainage network at the airport together with the fluid used for the de-icing of aircraft during the winter.
The new device is not only capable of monitoring, but also plays a direct role in protecting water quality. The system signals if the concentration of pollutants reaches the applicable threshold, and immediately prevents the polluted rainwater from being discharged into natural waters. In such cases, a special sluice gate closes, thus channeling the water collected in the drainage canals into the airport’s waste water drainage system and, ultimately, into the municipal sewage system.
The de-icing fluid is not poisonous, and is easily broken down in natural waters, but in large quantities it is still harmful to the environment, since it extracts oxygen from the water as it disintegrates, which may endanger the local plant and wildlife. Normally, rainwater collected at the airport flows into the Gyáli brook, and from there, it reaches the Ráckeve branch of the Danube. Since the operation of the system, two pumps have pumped over more than 1200 cubic meters of water, which means that burdens on the water quality of the Gyáli brook from the operation of the airport have been reduced by this quantity.
Similar devices are operating at several airports where HOCHTIEF Concessions, the majority owner of Budapest Airport is partly or wholly responsible for operations. According to the unanimous opinion of experts, the system has performed well abroad; thus, the environmental specialists of Budapest Airport are also hopeful of successful operation.
"Budapest Airport’s latest environmental initiative is one of many steps taken in the interest of the sustainable development of the airport,” said Gábor Szarvas, environment, health and safety director for Budapest Airport. "Based on experiences from abroad and from our one-year trial operation, we have every reason to be optimistic that the system will work, and we are delighted that with this successful project we can make a significant contribution to the water quality of the natural waters near the airport,” he added.

The contractor in charge of implementing the project fitted noise insulation on the bedroom windows of properties near the airport most exposed to noise burdens, and installed ventilators to provide a source of fresh air during the summer with the windows closed, thus safeguarding rest for residents.
