Lions invade Ferihegy

No less than 13 lions traveled through Budapest Airport today – thankfully, in travel trunks reinforced with thick steel cages. The special journey was organized by English animal rights activists, who rescued the African predators from an overcrowded Rumanian zoo near Oradea, and transported them to a much more spacious wildlife park in Doncaster. According to the best of our knowledge, so many lions have never been transported on board a single flight – perhaps we witnessed a new entry for the Guiness Book of Records. More »

Only one-third of the trade unions’ demands from December passed the test of legality; out of the 12 demands, only 4 may serve as the basis for a work stoppage. This was confirmed by the Metropolitan Court of Budapest in its ruling dispatched this week, also emphasizing that there is no point in subsequently expanding or elaborating on the demands; the judges also rejected this in their final and valid court ruling. There is not a single word in the court ruling about continuing the strike, alleged “Greek strikebreakers” or “workplace intimidation”. On the contrary, the court even ruled the trade unions’ demand relating to the collective bargaining agreement unlawful. More »

Human cases of swine flu have been reported in Mexico and certain areas of the United States of America. Currently, Hungary is not threatened by a direct pandemic nor have been any positively identified swine flu cases yet. BA advises passengers returning from a visit to an affected area to monitor their own health closely for seven days. Selective waste collection starts at Budapest Airport

Budapest Airport (BA) served a total of 8 443 053 passengers in 2008, 1.8 percent less than in the previous year. 505 594 passengers used Ferihegy in December of last year, 9.9 percent less than in 2007. December traffic was also impacted significantly by the strike, since airlines were forced to cancel 283 flights during the 14-day work stoppage affecting 14 500 passengers. More »
