The maximum permitted weight of hold baggage is usually 20 kg, but some airlines
have different regulations of their own. For example, there may be significant differences between the rules of traditional airlines and low-cost carriers. A per-kilogram surcharge is payable in case hold baggage exceeds the permitted weight limit. The extent of excess baggage is determined by the check-in agent, and recorded on the ticket. Boarding passes are only issued after payment of the surcharge at the customer service of the airline or check-in agent in question. Please contact your airline about regulations on baggage.
Hold baggage is checked in at the check-in counter after ticketing. All hold baggage must be fitted with name tags, which are available from check-in staff. To enhance the security of hold baggage, a foiling service is available in the departure hall for a charge.
During check-in, agents place the appropriate markings on baggage. Items which cannot be transported on the baggage belt (e.g. sporting equipment, paintings, musical instruments, etc.) are taken to the aircraft by porters. Large musical instruments (larger than hand baggage size) may only be taken on board with a ticket purchased for the object, since a seat is required for their placement. If you plan to take special items with you, it is advisable to contact your airline when purchasing your ticket, or four or five days prior to departure.
Check-in staff will place special tags on baby carriages and wheelchairs. These can be used all the way up to the door of the aircraft. They are then taken by porters to the cargo bay and returned to the door upon arrival. Significant restrictions apply to the transportation of animals on board; please make sure you contact your airline for details.
Hold baggage is also subject to security screening. If security staff detect items which require more thorough checking, the owner of the piece of baggage in question is escorted back to the checkpoint and asked to open the bag, so that its contents may be checked in his or her presence.
