What documents do I need to have with me to fly?

A document verifying personal identity is required in all cases. A personal ID card is sufficient if you are flying between nations that have joined the Schengen Convention, but a valid passport is required for flights outside of the Schengen zone. Entry to certain countries could also be subject to additional requirements, such as possessing a visa entitling the holder to enter on one or more occasions. Before you travel, please check the applicable regulations on the website of your airline or of the foreign ministry of your country.

What documents are required for children?

The same rules apply to children as to adults. If they do not have a personal ID card yet, they require a valid passport to travel within the Schengen zone as well.

Do foreign nationals need a visa when traveling to Hungary?

That is dependent on the nationality of the passenger. Please enquire at the embassy of your destination country located in your country, or check the website of the foreign ministry of your country. Transfer passengers may require a transit visa in some cases.

Where are visas checked?

Visas are checked by the airlines at the check-in counters and/or during boarding. Please check the terms and conditions that passengers must accept when booking the flight, since some airlines require all non-EU/EEC nationals to present their travel documents and to have their boarding passes stamped at the check-in counter prior to undergoing security screening. If the inscription 'VISA CHECK' is featured on your boarding pass in block capitals, this means that you must have your visa inspected at the check-in counter.

How long before departure should I arrive at the airport?

Check-in, i.e. the administration of bookings and baggage, usually begins two hours before the departure of the flight. It is recommended to arrive at the airport by this time at the latest in order to leave sufficient time for all processes, even if check-in has been completed via the internet prior to arrival at the airport.

Where do I find the check-in counters for my flight?

Information on which counters in which terminal will serve as the location for check-in can be found on the website of Budapest Airport under the flight information section or the table showing the split of the airlines by terminals. This information can also be obtained from your airline, or, in the case of on-line check-in, your boarding pass will specify the location of the designated check-in counter. Signs near the entrances to Terminals 2A and 2B also show the airlines performing check-in there. In the departure hall, the numbers of the check-in counters for flights due to depart from the given terminal are shown on the central flight information board. Check-in counters are displayed here approximately 2 hours prior to departure, upon the opening of the counters.

When does online check-in begin?

This changes from airline to airline, so please check the website of your airline.

What are the weight and size restrictions applicable to hold baggage?

Rules relating to baggage are defined by the airlines. The relevant airline pages have been collected here

How can bicycles, skis and other baggage of non-standard size be transported on board aircraft?

Rules on the transportation of baggage of non-standard size or form differ from airline to airline, so please check the website of your airline. It is a general rule, however, for the transportation of bicycles that the handlebars must be turned sideways to be in line with the frame and must be fixed, the wheels must be deflated and the pedals must be removed. Passengers must provide for the packaging of any sports equipment, but some airlines provide boxes free of charge or for a fee. If this is not the case, the secure baggage wrapping service available at the terminals could also offer an alternative solution.

What are the opening hours of the airport? Is it possible to spend the night at the airport if my flight leaves early in the morning?

The airport is open 24 hours a day all year round, so it is possible to wait for flights during the night as well.

Is there a service available to help children traveling alone? How far can they be escorted personally at the airport?

The airport does not offer a separate service for this. If you would like to arrange an escort for unaccompanied minors, please indicate this to your airline during booking. The 'unaccompanied minor' (UM) service is available from any airline for children aged 4-12 years. It is also possible to request a dedicated staff member who only deals with the child in question throughout the entire journey. Family members who are not traveling may escort the child until the passenger security screening checkpoint.

How is it possible to request assistance or an escort for disabled, elderly or visually impaired passengers?

If you require assistance at the airport or on board the aircraft, you need to inform your airline of this already during booking. If you did not request the assistance service during booking, you may still do so by filling out the request form found on our website. Please order the service seven days in advance if possible, but at least 48 hours prior to departure, since such bookings are prioritized against ad hoc needs, and are also used as input for capacity planning. Nevertheless, call points are available near the entrances to the terminals, where assistance may be requested on an ad hoc basis as well. The service provider strives to satisfy such requests as soon as possible based on traffic conditions.

Are pregnant women allowed to fly?

Yes, without restriction until the 7th month of the pregnancy. After the 7th month, it is recommended to consult with your doctor before flying. After the 8th month, your airline may request a doctor's certificate confirming that the expectant lady may fly without any risks.

How is it possible to speed up the checks which need to be performed before flying (check-in, security screening, passport control)?

Queuing at check-in can be avoided by using online check-in or self-check-in kiosks. Once this is complete and you have received your boarding pass, if you do not have any hold baggage, you may proceed to passenger security screening. If you have hold baggage, you can leave these at your airline's baggage drop-off counter. The time required to undergo security screening can be shortened if you purchase a coupon from one of the travel agencies operating at the airport for the Fast Track Lane, a dedicated express screening channel. The Fast Track Lane is available free of charge for elderly, disabled and pregnant passengers and those traveling with small children.

Where are departures and arrivals located at Terminal 2?

The arrivals level is located on the ground floor and the departure level is on the first floor. If you arrive at the airport by car, please keep left to access arrivals and keep right to access departures. Bus number 200E stops on the arrivals level.

Is smoking permitted at the airport?

Smoking is generally prohibited within the terminals at Budapest Airport. Smoking is only permitted at designated locations, in front of the terminal buildings, at a distance of at least 5 meters from the entrances.

How can I find out which boarding gate will my flight depart from?

Some airlines already specify the boarding gate on the boarding pass. At the airport, boarding gates are first shown on the monitors in the transit area, after passenger security screening. The gate number will appear 40-50 minutes prior to departure, which enables passengers to reach any gate comfortably. The method of boarding, and thus also which gate will be used, is dependent on the decision of the airline but can also be guessed by the boarding gate number. The basic boarding gates are 12 gates found under number A12-19 and B2-5. Bus gates are the A1,2,3,4,6,9,11 and the B8,9,12,13,15,16,17,18 gates. Jetties are found at the gates A5,7,8,10 and B1,6,7,10,11,14,19.

Can taxes be reclaimed at the airport if I am traveling to a non-Schengen country?

A tax reclaim counter is available on the departure level of Terminal 2B in the landside area, next to the ticketing counter. Passengers are advised that the products in question must be shown and verified at the counter before the hold baggage is checked in. Taxes are reimbursed to passengers at the designated Interchange counters in the transit area, against a voucher.

What should I do if my baggage is lost or damaged?

Please indicate the problem before you leave the transit area, at the lost and found counter of your airline's ground handling partner. These counters are located near the baggage carousels used for baggage reclaim. Please always check your bags when you retrieve them from the carousel. If you believe that something is missing from the contents, you can report the matter to the Airport Police by email at ugyelet@rri.police.hu

Who should I contact if I have lost something at the airport or on board the aircraft?

Please enquire at the lost and found unit of your airline's ground handling partner, or at Budapest Airport by email at securitylostandfound@bud.hu.

How is it possible to transport animals? Can they be taken into the terminal building until I check in and wait for my flight?

If you would like to transport animals on your flight, this has to be indicated to your airline already during booking in all cases. An excess weight fee is payable for the transportation of pets. Animals may be transported as cabin baggage up to 5 kilograms (PETC - Pet in Cabin), whilst over 5 kilograms they must be transported in the cargo hold (AVIH - Animal in Hold). The cheapest solution is to transport them as cargo. Generally, a health certificate not older than 1 week, issued by a veterinarian, is necessary, and the vaccination certificate and, in the case of animals with microchip implants, also the passport must be presented. A cage is required to transport the animal, although some airlines are able to provide these. It is recommended to place rags in the cage under the animal, and to equip it with a water container for drinking. Please be sure to enquire at the customer service or on the website of your airline whether there are any special rules. Requirements may also differ depending on your destination; for example, in the United Kingdom, regulations require that animals arriving in the country be placed in quarantine for several weeks before being allowed to enter.
Budapest Airport is a dog-friendly airport; dogs may be brought into the terminal building.

What should I do if my flight is canceled due to bad weather or other reasons?

If you are already at the airport, please contact the counter of your airline's ground handling partner. If you have not yet traveled to the airport, please contact your airline. Passengers are advised to provide contact information during booking to make sure airlines can get in touch in case of changes affecting the flight.

How can I obtain information about the passenger list and/or specific passengers?

Passenger lists are confidential, neither the airport operator, nor the airlines provide this information.

Is photography permitted at the airport?

Yes, photography is permitted for private purposes nearly everywhere at the airport, except in passenger security screening areas, at passport control and at customs counters.

Where can I provide feedback about my experiences of the airport?

Please send your observations to feedback@bud.hu.

Can drones be carried in hand baggage?

Budapest Airport Zrt – also taking recommendations of the Hungarian authorities into consideration – currently applies the following rules to transporting drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAVs):

Transportation of drones on board aircraft is ensured for all passengers, in hold baggage. We recommend that the item should be appropriately and securely packed in order to prevent it from any damage. Professional wrapping of bags in foil is available in both terminals. It is also possible to take out insurance for hold baggage – it is recommended to do so in view of the value of the drone in the bag.

Accessories detached from drones – such as valuable cameras – are still allowed to be carried in cabin baggage.

The security of our passengers continues to be our top priority, and our company makes every effort to maintain it.
